There are many factors that contribute to healthy and fresh-looking skin. Even if you try to follow the most important rules for skin care, some situations are unavoidable. Unfortunately, constantly touching your face with your hands or using mobile devices negatively impacts the condition of our skin. We also sometimes forget to clean our makeup brushes, which can also affect its long-term condition. However, there are certain behaviors that can be avoided. Do you follow them?
1. Do you test cosmetics?
Excitement about a new cream, serum, or balm is a normal reaction. We usually apply a new product to our face or body shortly after purchasing it. Have you done a skin patch test beforehand? Perhaps your new cosmetic contains an ingredient your skin is allergic to, and applying it will cause redness, a rash, or spots? You wouldn't want such a reaction to appear all over your face, would you? Instead of applying the product immediately, apply a small amount to a small area of your body first. In case of an allergic reaction, choose a discreet, inconspicuous area — for example, behind the ear. Then wait 24 hours, observing your skin for any changes. If any reaction occurs, it's a sign that the product isn't for you.
2. Do you think hair cosmetics have no effect on the skin?
Shampoos, conditioners, hairsprays. All of these products can clog pores, dry out the scalp, and, like creams , cause allergic reactions. Shampoos containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) not only create lather, which is pleasant, but they can also irritate and dry out the skin. Try using a product containing salicylic acid once a week. This will prevent the appearance of pimples and breakouts. If you use hairspray and wash your hair in the morning, unfortunately, residue will remain on the pillowcase. As a result, the hairspray also irritates your face. Make sure to wash your sheets frequently and tie your hair up before bed. This will prevent additional damage and chafing, which also negatively impacts its appearance.
3. Do you sunbathe right after epilating?
Epilation offers many benefits and allows you to take a break from re-hairing, sometimes even for several weeks. Many of us opt for this treatment just before vacation to avoid worrying about it while away. Unfortunately, many of us also sunbathe immediately after epilation. Remember that after hair removal, the skin is very sensitive. Sun exposure, unfortunately, only worsens the situation. Wait at least 24 hours before going out in the sun. Of course, remember to use appropriate sunscreen. Sun protection is an absolute must on sunny days, whether you're going for a walk or to the beach.
4. Do you take care of your mental health?
Wondering what mental health has to do with our skin? A lot. Stress, constant anxiety, and depression all have a huge impact on the condition of our skin. Stress releases cortisol, a chemical also known as the stress hormone or — much more ominously — the killer hormone. Cortisol retains salt in the body, influences fat storage, and disrupts hormonal balance. Acne is probably the most common sign of neglecting our mental well-being, but it's not the only signal from the body. Exposing ourselves to stress, lack of sleep, or constant tension also exposes us to skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, or even psoriasis. A simple way to combat stress and thus rejuvenate the skin is through breathing therapies, for example, with scented, soothing oils.
5. Do you drink a lot of coffee?
Coffee and some types of tea dehydrate the body and can cause dry skin. When drinking both of these beverages, remember to drink almost twice as much water. If you can't give up your morning and afternoon coffee, try to limit your intake to a minimum. Perhaps one day you'll take up the challenge of completely giving up this beverage. Then, opt for healthy alternatives, such as acai berry juice, which is a fantastic antioxidant and energizing agent.
6. Do you collect your cosmetics?
If your favorite powder or lipstick are essentials you never part with, you need to regularly replace them with new products. Over time, cosmetics accumulate bacteria, which can cause skin irritations and eye infections. Replace eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara every six months — more often if you apply cosmetics with your fingers. Foundation, blush, and loose powders can last up to two years, provided you properly clean the brushes you use after use. If you store your favorite lipstick in a cool place, you can enjoy it for up to a year.
We all probably make skincare mistakes at times. We usually do it completely unconsciously, unaware that some of our behaviors can negatively impact the health and condition of our skin. Remember to practice daily skincare and follow a few simple rules for self-care.
