We've all heard golden advice and tips that will keep our hair healthier, our nails stronger, and our skin eternally youthful. You can always count on your mom, your best friend, your older sister, or a glossy magazine. How many of them actually work, and how many are just fabrications? We debunk 5 myths about health and beauty that you shouldn't rely on for longevity and good looks.
1. Toxins can be sweated out
When we go to the sauna or engage in an intense workout, we assume we'll sweat out toxins. However, despite our best efforts and beliefs, this isn't possible. Indeed, toxins accumulate in our bodies, specifically in the liver, and are eliminated through urine. Sweat is merely a mixture of water, salt, proteins, and non-toxic urea.
2. The hair gets used to the shampoo, which causes damage.
Who doesn't love trying out new cosmetics? Gels, oils, balms, creams... The list is endless. We also change our shampoos from time to time. We usually do this based on the "commonly accepted rule" that hair gets used to a shampoo, which damages it much faster. Using the same product over and over again affects its condition, so we should switch to a different one. Well, that's not true. The condition of our hair is primarily affected by weather conditions – mainly wind and sun, as well as the use of a hairdryer and straightener. Residues from oils, pastes, and styling products also accumulate on our strands, causing our hair to dry out or become dull over time. Therefore, don't let how long you've been using your shampoo dictate your decision. Change it whenever you feel the need. Your hair will certainly not protest if you keep using the same cosmetic.
3. Lipstick dries out your lips
Lip balm is meant to moisturize, and it does its job. Of course, you should be careful about which product you use. However, remember that constant licking, especially in the wind, dries your lips. Ingredients like camphor, alcohol, and menthol also contribute to the lack of proper hydration. Therefore, if you truly care about proper lip hydration, choose a natural product containing lanolin and moisturizing oils.
4. Painting your nails makes your nails turn yellow
If you constantly paint your nails without giving them a chance to breathe, they can become slightly discolored. Fortunately, this doesn't mean there's no way to prevent this. Remember to apply a base coat before applying your base coat. This can be a clear polish, which will protect the nail plate from absorbing the color pigment, or a conditioner. If you've noticed your nails are already slightly discolored, exfoliate them with baking soda and water. The nail plate will regain its natural color.
5. Drinking water protects the skin from drying out
Of course, drinking adequate amounts of water is very important for our health. However, the idea that drinking water prevents dry skin is a myth! Water works internally, hydrating our cells. This has nothing to do with the dryness or firmness of our skin. Unfortunately, some dietitians, commissioned by mineral water producers, insist that a properly hydrated body equates to healthy and smooth skin. Proper care is key to achieving this appearance – exfoliation to exfoliate dry skin and moisturizing with a cream designed for this purpose.
Many of us believe in good, proven methods and advice, which are often passed down from generation to generation. Nevertheless, it's worth checking their validity from time to time to avoid causing further harm.
