Decalogue of oily skin – 10 commandments on how to care for it to keep it in good shape

Dekalog skóry tłustej – 10 przykazań jak o nią dbać, by była w dobrej formie

If you've been blessed with oily facial skin, you know how demanding and monotonous daily care can be. It was once believed that oily skin was much better at combating the signs of aging, arguing that it was less prone to wrinkles than, for example, dry skin. The truth is that oily skin is characterized by acne, which exposes it to faster aging. Consequently, oily skin unfortunately requires more attention and patience from its owners, primarily because, on the one hand, it's associated with overactive sebaceous glands and, on the other, it's characterized by dehydration. It requires strong, yet gentle, care. It's worth noting that the tips provided in this article can also benefit those with combination skin. As you well know, combination skin is a combination of dry skin (cheeks and temples) and oily skin (the so-called T-zone—forehead, nose, and chin). Due to the problematic nature of oily and combination skin, it's important to focus on their proper care. What to do with oily skin? What rules should you follow? I answer these and other questions below. I invite you to read on.

1. Keep your skin clean

The basic skincare routine for oily and combination skin is keeping it clean. Proper hygiene is the foundation for all other treatments for oily skin. Remember this rule: don't touch your face unnecessarily, especially if you haven't washed your hands first. Oily skin is very susceptible to all kinds of bacteria, which, if they get on your face, can cause additional problems and develop into a skin infection. Acne or a difficult-to-control inflammatory lesion may appear on your face. If for any reason you must touch your skin, remember to wash your hands thoroughly. However, if that's not possible, use wet wipes or antibacterial hand cleansers. Never, ever squeeze any breakouts on your face or body. Doing so improperly can do more harm than good – it can easily lead to scarring and discoloration. Wash your face in warm water, using products that don't contain alcohol. Overly aggressive facial cleansers, toners, or emulsions contribute to the excessive removal of lipids and ceramides, which are essential for the proper functioning of the skin's lipid barrier. Wash oily skin with gentle lotions or gels designed for this type of skin. Remember not to rub your skin with a towel – use it to blot away water from your body, which will prevent further irritation. It's important to change your face towel frequently and ensure it's free from dyes that can affect the skin's condition. The easiest way to dry your skin is to use a delicate paper towel or tissues. Skin hygiene is not just about washing it, but also about the environment around us. Therefore, don't forget to properly humidify the air in your home and frequently change your bedding, especially pillows, which hold sebum released from your face after sleeping.

2. Moisturize during the day, moisturize at night

Does oily skin need hydration? You might think that oily skin should be degreased due to its high sebum production. Fortunately, this myth has long been debunked. Today, everyone should be aware that both oily and combination skin require absolute hydration. If you have oily skin, you should use lightweight cosmetics with moisturizing properties. This rule applies to both day and night care. Moisturizing creams significantly even out skin tone, smooth its surface, hydrate, and nourish it. Choose a cream designed for oily or combination skin, such as the ultra-light and fast-absorbing Soft Cream by Annabelle Minerals .

3. Exfoliate your skin regularly

An essential addition to oily and combination skincare routines is exfoliation. This simple home beauty treatment is a fantastic aid in combating oily skin. Simply exfoliate your skin at least once a week, which will help remove dead skin cells and cleanse the complexion of impurities. If you have oily skin, there are no contraindications to using various types of exfoliators. If your skin is thick, hard, and resistant to abrasion, you can confidently opt for a fine-grained exfoliator. However, if your oily skin is sensitive and delicate, use an enzymatic exfoliator, which won't irritate it.

4. Mineral cosmetics – oily skin and makeup

Makeup is a crucial element of daily skincare for everyone. The challenges of oily and combination skin make finding the right makeup very difficult. Most products don't absorb well, further causing severe irritation or excessive oiliness. Have you ever wondered: which foundation should I choose for oily skin? Which products are the safest? Is there a magic product that will tame combination skin? You'll find the answer to these and other questions in Annabelle Minerals products . Mineral makeup is the perfect choice for those struggling with oily and combination skin. Annabelle Minerals offers mattifying foundations designed for those with oily and acne-prone skin. 5. Gentle and effective makeup removal

Properly selected makeup is half the battle; the other is the right makeup removal products. Caring for oily and combination skin requires a lot of patience and consistency. Makeup removal is incredibly important in the entire skincare process. Makeup removal is sacred! You can't resist the urge. You can't just skip it. Oily skin needs to be cleansed regularly! Maintaining its hygiene should be a priority. Makeup removal for both oily and combination skin should be gentle and effective. An excellent makeup removal method is called OCM – oil-based cleansing, which involves cleansing the skin with oil. Here, once again, the new Annabelle Minerals STAY PURE multi-purpose oil will come to the rescue. This natural oil was created with problematic, oily, and acne-prone skin in mind. 6. Reach for clay – make a mask

Contrary to popular belief, oily skin loves masks... and it absolutely loves clay masks! A clay mask is a bull's-eye for oily and combination skin. This simple mask can work wonders: it cleanses the skin of all kinds of toxins and impurities, adds freshness and vitality, positively affects its ability to regenerate, and significantly smooths the skin. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects are strong but non-invasive. Clay doesn't irritate the skin, and its natural composition certainly won't cause allergic reactions. The choice of clay for oily skin is obvious; we choose green clay. Remember that the composition of such clay must be entirely natural (if the composition contains additional ingredients, put the product aside and look elsewhere), and its texture must be loose. Green clay absorbs impurities from the skin, making it ideal for acne-prone and very oily skin. Green clay has a gentle exfoliating, astringent, mattifying, and slightly drying effect. It's indispensable for skin disinfection, excellent for cleansing inflammatory lesions and accelerating their healing, and it also closes enlarged pores and prevents the formation of blackheads. Run to the store!

7. Don't be afraid of the dermatologist

If your oily skin isn't cooperating with you and you feel like you've exhausted all possible methods to combat its annoying symptoms, don't hesitate and schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. You might consider this a right step for your health and appearance. When choosing a good dermatologist, you can rely on the opinions of others, for example, by reading about them online. Don't be afraid of your first visit and don't be embarrassed under any circumstances. Remember that a good dermatologist won't make you feel embarrassed. Above all, they should conduct a comprehensive interview with you about your lifestyle, diet, the cosmetics you use, and the stimulants you use. During your first meeting, the dermatologist's most important task is to get to know you and your skin in as much detail as possible. This interview forms the basis for appropriate treatment. If at any stage of your appointment you feel your doctor isn't fulfilling their responsibilities, change your doctor. You are the most important person. Remember to be patient and don't expect spectacular results overnight. Give your doctor a chance to choose the right treatment. Every oily skin type is different, so a treatment that worked for 10 people won't necessarily work for you, and vice versa. Don't demonize it, and remember that you're doing this for yourself.

8. Stress – keep your mind healthy

Our bodies are trained to cope with stress; it's safe to say we'd struggle to function without it. Sudden, short-term stress mobilizes the body for a defense response, and such a situation is completely natural. However, long-term, chronic stress carries numerous dangers. The first symptom of chronic stress is an immediate decline in immunity, which we can see clearly in our skin. It becomes tired, dull, prone to breakouts, and unresponsive to any skincare routine. As a result, our well-being and self-esteem automatically decline. Chronic stress is a truly formidable enemy, the consequences of which last for a very long time. You can't expose your body to stress. Take care of yourself. During the day, try to carve out literally 5 minutes of time just for yourself, time without distractions and during which you can turn off your mind. Relax! Go for a walk, listen to your favorite music, allow yourself to do nothing. If you make a few simple changes to your life, you'll see the results very quickly—the first ones will show up on your face! However, if you feel like you can't cope with your stress, see a good psychologist who can help you regain your composure.

9. Sleep – sleep deeply

Sleep is crucial to skincare. It's the only time of the day when we dedicate ourselves exclusively to ourselves. Sleep affects the well-being of the entire body. While we sleep, our skin works hard, cleansing and regenerating itself, but it also rests and has time to recover from a long day of hard work. It's up to us how much we gain from sleep and how much it contributes to meeting our needs. Above all, try to get 8 hours of sleep, because only then is sleep effective and beneficial for the entire body. Bedtime is crucial; it's important to go to bed before midnight, meaning not falling asleep on the same day we wake up. The environment in which we fall asleep should be quiet and peaceful, free from distractions. Adequate air circulation is also important, so always air your bedroom about 15 minutes before bed and turn down the heaters to avoid sleeping in excessive heat. Try not to use your phone before going to bed, and especially not while you're in bed. Sleep is supposed to be relaxing, unwinding, and energizing. Take advantage of its benefits! Remember, good sleep = healthy and beautiful skin.

10. Not everything at once!

We often expect too much from ourselves. This approach extends to many stages of our lives, including our skincare. Try not to expect too much from yourself and apply the same principle to your skin. Oily skin can't handle too many treatments and changes at once. Contrary to appearances, it's delicate and very sensitive to all sorts of new things. So, try to introduce changes gradually and calmly. Everything takes time and patience. Don't use 10 different cosmetics at once, as you won't allow any of them to work properly, and what's more, you could expose your skin to severe irritation. If you can't get organized because of your lifestyle, don't make changes that require regularity at long intervals, such as applying a mask once a week. I guarantee you'll apply it once and only once, or you'll be back in three weeks. Focus on activities that quickly become habitual and can be performed daily, such as moisturizing your face with a suitable cream every day. Over time, you'll learn consistency in your skincare routine, which I'm sure will translate to every area of your life. The bottom line is that caring for your body is, above all, caring for your soul.
