Procrastination - how to overcome it?

Prokrastynacja - jak ją pokonać?

We all have a tendency to put things off until later. This is completely normal and understandable, but when procrastination completely takes over our lives, it's a sign that it's high time to do something about it, get a grip, and get started. They say that those who want it will find a reason, those who don't want it will find an excuse. Whenever you feel like postponing a task or canceling a meeting, remember that life won't wait for you. And if you feel like you have no control over your schedule and are constantly postponing deadlines, this article is for you. Below, you'll find some proven tips that will help you deal with procrastination once and for all.

Measure your strength against your intentions

We often take on too much. Too many responsibilities lead to fatigue, stress, and a loss of concentration. As a result, work doesn't go as smoothly as we might think, and we constantly start postponing deadlines, which, after a while, start to pile up and become very frustrating. It's often difficult to escape this spiral, so before taking on another challenge, consider whether you really have time for it. Plan all your daily tasks with a time margin to ensure you'll get everything done.

Divide tasks into stages

Some tasks intimidate us from the outset with their complexity, time commitment, and workload. However, when we break them down into stages and carefully plan them step by step, completing them can prove to be a pure pleasure. It's worth preparing a plan of our actions and following the pre-established plan. This approach will certainly save us time – when we're at a loss for what to do next, a cheat sheet in a notebook will be indispensable.

Plan long term

Don't put off tasks until the last minute and don't focus solely on the here and now. Long-term planning will significantly simplify and streamline your short-term activities. Having a plan for the coming weeks, months, or even years will often (though not always, of course) help you avoid making rash decisions under time pressure. Besides, some challenges take time. We can't do or achieve everything at once, so it's worth always keeping in mind the quote: "Never give up on a goal just because of the time it will take to achieve it. The time will pass anyway."

Leave the hardest for first

It's good to start the day by tackling the most challenging tasks. It may not always be possible, but if you have the opportunity, it's worth trying. Otherwise, thoughts about what's still left to do will constantly occupy our minds. Such distraction isn't conducive to work, so as a result, we won't complete the remaining tasks properly either. It's better to tackle the unpleasant tasks from the very beginning and then be proud of ourselves. :-) This feeling is incredibly uplifting!

Don't compare yourself to others

Unfortunately, we tend to compare ourselves to others, often belittling ourselves in the process. It's completely pointless. We all have our own problems, weaknesses, and insecurities, so there's no point focusing on others. Be inspired, but don't let yourself be convinced that you're worse than some friend, or that you have fewer talents or skills. Remember that people who are good at one thing may not feel confident in another. No one is perfect, and constant comparisons and measuring yourself against others can be very demotivating. So do your own thing; don't look to others and don't get discouraged, because they don't have it any easier.

Organize your workplace

Unnecessary papers on your desk, an empty coffee cup, or a sandwich plate don't exactly help you concentrate—quite the opposite, they distract and detract. The same applies to various knick-knacks, which can be inspiring, but in excess can become overwhelming. So try to dedicate at least ten minutes each day to tidying up your workspace. Put things back in their place, organize your notes, wipe down the countertop, and then focus on what's truly important.

Look after yourself

If you eat poorly and stay up all night, it will definitely affect your creativity and productivity. Remember to measure your strength against your intentions. Work hard, but don't overexert yourself, or your energy will quickly plummet. When we're sleep-deprived and constantly consuming ready-made meals for dinner, our bodies begin to rebel. Suddenly, we have less energy, we don't want to do anything, and the last thing on our minds is work. We start to procrastinate, and a vicious cycle ensues.

Multitasking is strength

In today's world, we're constantly rushing. It's truly difficult to find time for both daily chores and pleasures. However, it's worth combining tasks (not always pleasant with useful ones) and saving precious minutes during the day. Waiting for the water to boil for tea? Put on the dishwasher right now. Talking on the phone? Picking up the child's toys scattered around the room. Mopping the floors? Put on headphones and open your favorite e-book. The possibilities are endless, and once we start working this way, multitasking will become a habit.

Reward yourself

It's long been known that rewards are motivating, so don't be afraid to pamper yourself from time to time. Of course, this isn't about spending money recklessly and then feeling guilty about ill-considered purchases, but about small pleasures. Did you manage to complete an important task? Meet up with a friend or buy a book you've been dreaming of for a long time. If you achieve a goal you've been striving for and reward yourself, you'll immediately awaken the strength to continue.

Don't be afraid to ask for help

No one person can do everything. So if you've been working on a topic for months and still can't figure it out, ask someone more experienced for help. You'll save not only time but also energy, which you can use more productively. Don't be afraid to ask; sometimes you need other people to get things moving.
