Back acne - where does it come from and how to fight it?

Trądzik na plecach - skąd się bierze i jak z nim walczyć?

Acne can often make life miserable. And while it most often affects the face, it often appears on the back as well. While it may not be immediately apparent to others, it's just as bothersome, problematic, and sometimes extremely painful, requiring appropriate action. Where does it come from? What are its causes, and, above all, how can we combat it? In the following article, we'll reveal how to combat back acne and enjoy healthy skin!

Back acne - causes

There are many causes of back acne, and the most common ones include:

  • Poor hygiene primarily involves wearing clothes made of non-breathable, non-breathable materials, washing bras, towels, and bedding too infrequently, and neglecting to wash your back. It's just like any other part of your body and should be thoroughly washed daily. It's best to do this by hand, as sponges and washcloths are breeding grounds for bacteria, which unfortunately don't help in the fight against healthy skin.
  • Improper skincare – back acne is often caused by inappropriate cosmetics. Shower gels or balms with comedogenic ingredients can clog sebaceous glands and lead to inflammation. Also, make sure you thoroughly rinse off hair masks and conditioners in the shower. These can also worsen your skin condition, so it's best to develop the habit of washing your entire body after washing your hair.
  • Hormonal problems – this is where things get more complicated. The same hormonal issues can cause acne on both the face and back. However, it can also happen that the problem affects just one part of the body. Very often, back acne is also a consequence of discontinuing hormonal contraception, even if it didn't occur before starting it.
  • A poor diet – processed foods, fast food, lots of sugar and chemicals, combined with a fast, stressful lifestyle, can affect the condition of our skin, it is worth being aware of this.

Back acne – symptoms

Back acne typically manifests itself in the same way. It's characterized by enlarged pores, blackheads, inflammation, and infiltrative lesions. Painful, inflamed, and widespread back acne often heal slowly and leave scars. Pimples often cause discomfort – those located along the bra line are prone to abrasion and irritation. Severe acne can even prevent you from leaning comfortably, for example, against the back of a couch. Lesions are most common on the upper back. This area has the thickest skin and the most sebaceous glands, and excessive sebum production blocks the pores.

Back acne and diet

With any skin problem, it's worth taking a broader perspective. Our skin reflects what's happening inside our bodies. Diet has a huge impact on the appearance of our skin, so if we notice its condition deteriorating, we should take a closer look at our daily diet. Very often, inflammation is caused by dairy products or excessive sugar consumption. It's also worth eliminating all processed foods, unhealthy snacks, alcohol, and other stimulants. Don't be afraid to reach for vegetables, antibacterial black cumin, flaxseed oil, and milk thistle with its detoxifying properties. Proper hydration is also crucial! Drink water and herbs – the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of cistus are beneficial for the skin. Supplementing with evening primrose oil can also be helpful, supporting the fight for smooth, healthy skin.

What helps with back acne

Back acne - home remedies for fighting pimples

Success in combating back acne depends largely on its cause. If the main problem was improper skincare, poor hygiene, or poor diet, you can largely reduce the inflammation on your own. If all home remedies fail, be sure to consult a specialist who will order tests and implement treatment. What can you do yourself to improve the condition of your back skin?

  • change towels regularly and wash them at high temperatures;
  • throw away all sponges and washcloths from the shower;
  • choose clothes made of breathable fabrics;
  • change and wash your bed linen regularly and use only cotton sets;
  • change and wash underwear frequently – i.e. bras;
  • if you have inflammation on your back, avoid mechanical peels;
  • wash your hair first, and only after washing off any masks start washing your body properly;
  • choose gentle cleansing cosmetics with friendly ingredients or wash your back with cosmetics intended for facial cleansing;
  • Include clay masks in your skincare routine – they have astringent, antibacterial and cleansing properties;
  • reach for tea tree oil - you can wash your entire back with it or apply it locally to the affected areas, it dries well, accelerates healing and has a disinfecting effect;
  • From time to time, massage your back with a product designed for acne-prone skin. We recommend the multi-purpose Stay Pure oil by Annabelle Minerals ;
  • Avoid solariums and excessive sun exposure – it only brings temporary improvement to the skin condition and then significantly worsens its condition.

Back acne – how to treat it?

As mentioned above, sometimes home remedies aren't enough to combat back breakouts, especially in advanced stages. Unfortunately, hormonal changes and fluctuations are very common, and in such cases, specialist help is recommended. Consult a doctor who will order blood tests. Knowing your hormone levels will allow you to develop a treatment plan and select appropriate anti-acne medications. Sometimes external remedies, such as creams or ointments, are sufficient, while other times, internal treatment in the form of pills is necessary. A dermatologist will also advise you on which treatments you can use at a beauty salon. Acid treatments, which not only combat imperfections but also eliminate discoloration and scarring, bring excellent results. Therefore, if your self-medication fails for a long time, don't try to do it yourself at all costs, as you could only harm yourself.
