Activated charcoal has been known for its healing properties for years, but did you know that it can bring just as many benefits to your skin if you incorporate it into your skincare routine? Below, you'll find recipes for tried-and-true charcoal masks. You can make them all at home, and the results will surely surprise you.
Activated carbon and its properties
Activated charcoal has excellent cleansing, astringent, and antibacterial properties. It thoroughly removes all impurities from the skin, improves its tone, lightens discolorations, minimizes pores, smooths the complexion, and restores its healthy appearance. It also accelerates the healing of wounds and blemishes. Furthermore, charcoal is an excellent and most powerful natural adsorbent—all dirt, dust, and sebum adhere to its particles. Charcoal-based cosmetics will restore your skin's radiance, improve its elasticity, minimize inflammation, and visibly tighten pores. You don't have to worry about dryness; carefully selected ingredients ensure optimal hydration.
Which coal should I choose?
Activated charcoal is available at any pharmacy. Its price is very budget-friendly, with a package costing a maximum of 10 złoty. Keep in mind that it can vary depending on the location. No matter which brand or form you choose, you won't notice a difference in effectiveness. Activated charcoal is available in traditional tablets and capsules. The latter are more convenient because they don't need to be crushed; the powder is fine and ready to use as a mask. The tablets do require crushing, but the process takes just a few seconds, so if you have them at home, feel free to grab them.
Activated carbon masks
You'll quickly appreciate the power of activated charcoal by preparing masks based on it at home. Depending on the blend of ingredients and the amount of charcoal, the final effect and their effects may vary. One will cleanse more, while the other will brighten. Of course, you can also experiment with your favorite ingredients and adapt them to your needs.
- Purifying mask with charcoal and clay
Combine two capsules or crushed charcoal tablets with a teaspoon of clay and water. The mixture should form a thick paste that won't run off your face. Green clay is the most cleansing, but if you have sensitive or irritation-prone skin, you can choose a gentler version, such as white. Apply the mask evenly to your face and rinse with warm water after fifteen minutes. After application, your skin will be cleansed of excess sebum, firmer, more taut, and soft to the touch. Skin blemishes will become less visible, blemish marks will be brighter, and pores will be visibly reduced. Your skin will regain its natural radiance and youthful appearance.
- Cleansing and brightening mask with charcoal and honey
Mix two capsules or crushed charcoal tablets with a tablespoon of liquid honey. The mask should have a fairly thick paste-like consistency. Apply it to your face and rinse with warm water after fifteen minutes. You can also try a gentle massage. Honey has brightening properties, so after application, you may notice your discolorations suddenly become less visible, brighten, and subtly change color. Your skin will be nourished, cleansed, and mattified, and pores will be minimized.
- Moisturizing and cleansing mask with charcoal and yogurt
Plain yogurt has excellent moisturizing properties, so mix it with two capsules or crushed charcoal tablets and apply a thick mask to your face. After fifteen minutes, rinse with warm water. This will benefit your skin in two ways: it will cleanse it of all impurities like sebum and dust, get rid of stubborn blackheads, and at the same time, you'll gain softer, smoother, and visibly more nourished skin. Your face will look healthier, younger, and more radiant!
- Peel-off mask with charcoal and gelatin
Struggling with blackheads on your nose? Don't worry, there's a solution. Mix two charcoal tablets or capsules with a tablespoon of gelatin and a little water in a bain-marie – this will allow all the ingredients to combine perfectly. Wait a moment for the consistency to thicken (it shouldn't run down your face) and reach the right temperature. Then, apply a thick layer of the mask to your T-zone. Wait for it to dry (up to 20 minutes) and remove the patch in one smooth motion. This is a peel-off mask, so you shouldn't have any trouble removing it. The result will be blackhead-free skin. Pores will be smaller, cleansed, and less visible to the naked eye.
Precautions
As with any mask or other cosmetic you're using for the first time, remember to perform a patch test. Also, don't overdo it with how often you use charcoal masks. Once a week is the maximum you should allow. Monitor your skin and tailor your care routine to its individual needs. Only then will you enjoy the best results.
